SQUAD AND PREVIEW – NORTHERN DIAMONDS V SUNRISERS
Head coach Trevor Griffin has named a 13 player squad for the Sunrisers first game back in the Charlotte Edwards cup. The players took a break from regional cricket for participation in the Hundred Tournament, but as it recommences the Sunrisers will be travelling away to South Northumberland CC to take on the Northern Diamonds on Wednesday 25thAugust.
Last time the Sunrisers came head-to-head with the Northern Diamonds was at the start of July and it was not the result we had hoped for. The Northern Diamonds won the toss and elected to bowl first displaying some great bowling performances from the start, setting the game up to be a challenging one. Northern Diamonds players who stood out in the bowling were; Gunn who bowled 3/25 from 4 overs, Graham who bowled 2/20 off 4 overs and Levick with 2/23 from 4 overs. This meant the Sunrisers were quickly faced with an unfortunate top order collapse. Gardner and Speed however had an innings saving partnership with 42 and 26* respectively, meaning the Sunrisers put a score of 116 on the board with 7 wickets lost.
The Sunrisers put up a tough fight in the beginning with 2 early wickets, one each from Villiers and Scrivens, but unfortunately had no further break throughs meaning the Northern Diamonds took the victory in just 16.2 overs. There were big batting performances from Dobson 44* and Taylor 43*, both of which will be wickets the Sunrisers will be seeking to take early this time round.
The Sunrisers will travel to Northumberland CC without wicket keeper Amara Carr who injured her finger whilst away with the London Spirit. This injury will see her miss the remainder of the T20 campaign.
Sunrisers have won 1/3 of their T20s so far, with only 3 games remaining in the competition. The Sunrisers need to secure a win to give themselves a chance at getting to the final’s day on Sunday 5th September. We are looking forward to seeing how this one plays out, good luck Sunrisers!
Sunrisers 13 player squad is as follows:
